Why learn Korean?

Korean has experienced a global surge in interest driven by the extraordinary international reach of K-pop, K-dramas, Korean cinema (including Oscar winner Parasite), and Korean cuisine. But beyond the cultural appeal, Korean is the official language of South Korea — one of Asia's most dynamic economies and a global leader in technology, entertainment, and beauty.

South Korean companies like Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and POSCO are major employers worldwide, and knowledge of Korean is a differentiating asset for professionals working in or with these organizations. South Korea also has significant investment activity across Southeast Asia, creating demand for Korean-speaking talent in the region.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, is one of the most elegantly designed alphabets in the world — famously learnable in a few hours. Once you can read Hangul, a huge portion of Korean pronunciation becomes accessible immediately. Compared to Japanese or Chinese, this makes Korean significantly less daunting for newcomers.

Korean grammar, however, is structured quite differently from English — verbs come at the end, and speech levels encode social relationships. This is where a skilled tutor makes a major difference: guiding you through honorifics and speech styles so your Korean feels natural and appropriate.

Frequently asked questions about learning Korean

How long does it take to learn Korean?

The FSI classifies Korean as Category IV — around 2,200 hours for professional proficiency for English speakers. However, conversational ability comes much faster. Many students can hold basic conversations within 6 months of consistent study.

Is Hangul hard to learn?

No — Hangul is considered one of the easiest writing systems to learn. Most determined learners can read Korean characters within 1–2 days of focused study. It was designed by King Sejong in the 15th century to be maximally learnable.

What are speech levels in Korean?

Korean has several speech levels (formal polite, informal polite, casual, honorific) that you use depending on the relationship and context. Beginners typically learn the formal polite form first, which works in most situations. Tutors gradually introduce other levels as you advance.

Can I prepare for TOPIK with a Headstart tutor?

Yes. The TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) is the standard Korean proficiency exam recognized by Korean universities and employers. Headstart tutors can prepare you for TOPIK I (levels 1–2) and TOPIK II (levels 3–6).

Will learning Korean from K-dramas actually work?

K-dramas are excellent for listening comprehension and natural speech patterns. Combined with formal lessons, immersing yourself in K-dramas can significantly accelerate your progress. Tutors can also explain cultural context for what you're watching.
