Why learn Vietnamese?
Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam, spoken by approximately 95 million people. Vietnam is one of Asia's most dynamic economies, with one of the fastest-growing manufacturing sectors and a rapidly expanding middle class. Major technology and consumer goods companies have shifted significant production to Vietnam, increasing demand for professionals with Vietnamese language capability.
Vietnamese uses a Latin-based alphabet (Quốc Ngữ) developed in the 17th century, making it significantly more accessible to Western learners than other Asian languages with unique scripts. The writing system, while diacritically complex, is learnable quickly.
Vietnamese is a tonal language with six tones, which presents an early challenge for learners — but the grammar is strikingly simple. There are no verb conjugations, no plurals, no grammatical gender, and minimal inflection. What you lose in grammatical complexity you gain in tonal precision.
Vietnam's cuisine, culture, and history make it a fascinating country to engage with deeply. Learning Vietnamese allows you to go beyond the surface of a country that has an extraordinarily rich and layered story.

Is Vietnamese hard to learn?
Vietnamese is classified Category III by the FSI — approximately 1,100 hours for professional proficiency. The six tones are the primary challenge. The Latin script and simple grammar are significant advantages compared to other Asian languages.
How many tones does Vietnamese have?
Vietnamese has six tones marked by diacritics in the written language. Each changes the meaning of a word entirely. Northern and Southern dialects pronounce tones differently, so students should clarify with their tutor which dialect they are studying.
What is the difference between Northern and Southern Vietnamese?
Northern Vietnamese (Hanoi) is the standard dialect and is what most textbooks teach. Southern Vietnamese (Ho Chi Minh City) differs in pronunciation and some vocabulary. Both are mutually intelligible.
